Inspired by Mike Albright's jeep toy list, I am about to attempt cataloging my collection again. Previous attempts failed as I was just numbering them sequentially under manufacturer headings. I figure now that I am trying to get a list of all manufacturers, and their models, a numbering system is in order. How is this for a first draft: Four blocks, 1st-two letters representing manufacturer, 2nd-type of jeep, 3rd-color, 4th-actual number assigned by manufacturer. The first block would consist of three letters: MBX for matchbox, MAJ for Majorette, HTW for Hot Wheels. The second block is simple CJ5, CJ3B, YJ, SJ. The third block is the main colour, represented by two letters: BL for blue, RD for red, GR for green. The fourth block might not be used all the time, as not all modles have their own numbers. The MBX MBs as found in five packs are not numbered, but in single packs they are. It may make sense to assign the single number to the one from the five pack also.
Example: MBX-CJ5-YL-72 is the yellow Superfast CJ5 released by matchbox in the 60s. It is the superfast, as if it was the regular wheeled one it would be MBX-CJ5-YL-72R. "R" for regular and can apply to any manufacturer.
Another example: MBX-CJ5-BL-37. Current Blue CJ5 from matchbox (the one with white splashes).
Yet another: CHI-CJ7-WH. China Jeep in white. No number available.
When used in a table format, the first column would contain the above four block number. The second column would be a brief description to differentiate between certain models in same colour like different decals or trailers. A third column would have a check box for have or have not, or quantity on hand. Condition of model can also be incorporated into another column. Scale would also be an important attribute.
